Rockstar
Description:
For this project my role is assisting Julie to do the editing for the footage that she created. I have done the first task which is resize the frame and keep tracking Tom’s head not out of the frame. What I am working on right now is adding some color effects on the rough cut.
Learning Outcome:
- Getting more practice on Final Cut Pro
- Start to learn After Effect
Goal:
I hope I can get more deep on the After Effect because I realize it is a very interesting and powerful software. Moreover, I had a meeting with my FVIM instructors and technicians, after I present them my grad project proposal, we all realize that I would mainly use After Effect for my grad project which consider more like an animation. So right now is a very good timing to warm up a little bit.
ePresence
Description:
My role in this project is assisting Grant for using the ePresence system to record the events. Those events and presentation will upload on the web to be shared. Also, this system can do the online presentation board-casting, which means we can upload the slide show ahead of time, then when we board-casting the presentation, he/she can control the slide show while in the ePresence system.
What I have done for now is learning how to use the system and testing the software and the computer with Grant together. We used the system for capturing the Telemusic Concert which happened in the IDS on Oct 26th. But because we make a mistake on one step, so we only capture the last part of the events. It is a very sad thing, but we all learn something from the mistake. So we will have couple more tests before IF09 and hopefully no more incident happen.
Learning Outcome:
- Use the ePresence system to capture the live event and board-casting online.
- Cooperate and support the live events such as installing and testing the equipments.
- Learn how the sound devices function and the mix console.
Goal:
- Minimize the chance that mistake happen
- Learn how to use the system to do the live time presentation.

Internship – Rockstar Project
My role in this internship is assist artist Julie Andreyev to do some editing work by using the Final Cut Pro for the video Rockstar. It is a portrayed of tracking Tom when he travel with the car and show how he sense the world. Rockstar is one of the components of recent project – Animal Lover.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Keep Tom’s face inside the frame by setting and tracking up the key frame in motion
- Make the special effect to create the illusion of Tom’s background
Expected Learning Outcomes:
Since I am going to do the post production of my grad film for next semester, it is an asset for me to have more solid editing skill. This internship can give me a chance to work with the footage from the RED camera, and get more deep with Final Cut Pro in the IDS station. Moreover, it is my first time to edit other people’s project, I think the dynamic between artist and me is a valuable experience of co-operation, just like in the real world.
Intership – IF09/IDS epresence Internship

To learn and assist Grant Gregson to use the new video capturing softwares and publishing systems -ePresence. This system will be in use for broadcasting the music concert which take place in Beijing, Toronto and Vancouver on Oct. 27,2009 and the Interactive Future 09- Stereo. My job is learning this new technology and helping the experts to set up and capture.
tasks + responsibilities
1.Learning how to use the ePresence capture station and software.
2.Helping set up the online broadcasting for the music concert and IF09.
3.Assisting capture the events.
expected learning outcomes
This is a very good chance for me to learning a new broadcasting technology which can spread the rich media presentation live. It is a very dynamic experience and it would be very helpful for me to have a deeper sight of webcasting. Because people are so rely on the internet to communicate nowadays, therefore this experience can inspire me infinite possibilities that internet can be use during my study or on my career. Moreover, the live capturing experience will be a good asset for me as a film student because I may have chance to use the camera for webcasting.

Video Collage
My idea of my grad project is continuing to explore the format of video collage. I did a video project in the Spring semester which composited the video clip in the same frame to create a simple narration. In this case, the characters were followed the script and acted individually. Since this project just an experiment the editing style, so the story are very simple.
I am very interested with effect that created by video collage. So I would like to use this kind of technique work on my grad project. But in this case, I would like to more video composite in the same frame, and each of them are have less relationship to each other but still can delivery the thematic idea.
The concept “complicated vs simple” is a very interesting to explore. It can be understand as the collage create a complicated images, but bring out a simple meaning. But on the other hand, those simple meaning are something we understand when we as a child, but forgotten after we grow up in the environment where have complicated social structure. The novella – The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery is one of my favorite book all time. This is a children’s book but so different with others. It talks a lot about the human nature. The pureness in our bodies are washing out by our experience and the competition in the society tranquilly. Some of the stories in this book can make the readers think a lot about their life.

For my grad project, I would like to talk about black and white. It is not only about two opposite grayscale, but the attitude in our thinking. I realize that people are easy to get into these two extreme sides when they are trying so hard to convince other people. But there are not much things are extremely black or white, most of them are in between. What I would like to do is getting deepper thought to clear how I represent this concept visually.
Moreover, Seurat’s oil paintings in the 19 century also inspire me a lot. The special technique that he dealing with the color make me want to try the different possibilities to composite the color in the frame. The idea of using color to create the emotion in art will be very useful in my project.
So in my grad project, I would like to indicate the idea of “transaction“.
- the transaction of color from black or white to multiple color
- the transaction of the material from basic, raw things to the human creature.
- the transaction of moving forward in a very hard and tough situation to a smooth and free situation
- the transaction of feeling from difficult to fluently

in the world according to the Hebrew bible.

When doing an art work, things change.
It alreay been 3 days from the Wednesday class. My idea to present the “Don’t Waste Life” now have a little bit change.
I would like to focuing more in the word “Life” rather than “death” because I would like to bring out the positive impression.
On the other hand coffin seem to be an object that have more attechment with the life.
Here is the trick. How can I use coffin – a object that represent the end of life, to carry out a message of “Life is good, so don’t waste life”?

Whenever I think about the logo and the poster, the first impression that come up to my mind is all about advertising, promoting or something like propaganda. They are the ways to represent a product, a party, an organization, an idea… The target can be actual and conceptual, but should be “something” that people want to know by other, to spread out.
“Your goal is to inspire them to take positive action for change”.
For the word “change”, first of all I think about Obama because he use this word to promote himself a lot. Of course there would be other possibilities such as the environmental issues, the student loan, the medical care…
For the other part “to take positive action”, what I understand is to take an action that stronger, effective, efficient, or benefit to all the people.
There is one thing I think about recently is WASTE. People can waste everything. Waste time, waste money, waste food, waste water, waste energy… those are happen all the time. I know it is impossible to eliminate all the wasting habit. But why don’t people just try their best to do it. For this project, I would like to narrow down to “waste life”.
“Don’t Waste Life” – that is the words that I want to warn myself all the time. Because everyone only have one chance. We can be so common, but we’d better not be fool away.
Therefore, for this poster and logo, the words that I should focusing on is “waste” and “life”.

Well, as you can see I changed my idea.
(again)This piece is very personal. =D But in fact I would like to make it have a little bit interaction with the audiences.
For the audience who don’t know about my story, they would guess those places might have some relationship with me. On the other hand, for the audiences who travelled with me, they would guess if I did it for the memory of our past.
It is a small simple piece. But I really enjoy the mood that when I look at it. The burned edge give me the feeling of warm directly. I don’t know why but it make me feel so quite, so peaceful.

I went to the Morris and Helen Belkin Art gallery at UBC during the reading break. They are currently hosting an exhibition called “Action-Camera: Beijing Performance Photography”. Basically it is a group of Chinese performance artists’ work done by photography and many of them are done or edited digitally. Those artists are dealing with the concepts of human and nature, philosophy, homosexual and so on. The nude, the mistreatment, the destruct are use a lot in those images which created a strong visual stimulation to the viewers’ emotion. As an audience, the content of the images are giving me the feeling of unsure. I don’t know if they are unreal or real. People can say many content of the images are make up for photograph purpose, but they don’t really sure if those issues exist or not. For instance, there are a set of two images are about the nude male bodied holding the dressed male bodies. They are posting like dancing on the huge table and a stage. In my point of view, this piece are talking about the homosexual which happened among the construction laborers who are working in the cities. Many of them are working and living together and their wives are staying at the countryside or working in the factories. Therefore this kind of relationship sometime happen among those male but hidden. This is a real issue attached to a performance project.
I think this exhibition impact me a lot. It is not because the works they show are so great or outstanding. In fact, in my personal opinion, some of them are kind of rough and they are not really please to look at since the subject matters are not in the main stream culture and even touch the bottom line of morality. But it is a very powerful experience because what I got from those works are not only the information that show on the pictures, but also the problems, the discussion that rise behind them. When I a look at the book for commenting, beside the people who think this exhibition is nice, some people were written like “please go to China to see what is real”, “those are fake and misleading people to have impact of China”… Somehow, I can understand why some audiences will have this kind of reaction. As an Chinese people, I can say “yes, most of them are fake in the way that those piece shown”. But if we think deeper, the meaning, the issue that behind the works are unwonted but real. The ways that performance artists approach are somehow violent and magniloquent, therefore they became unacceptable for some people. It remind me the Manet’s oil paintings.
This is not an exhibition for showing how Beijing looks like, and it is not for people who want to know about China in a common way. Those are performance art. If you think in this way prior, everything are reasonable.
