For both of the internship I have learned a lot of new stuff. The Rockstar project give me a chance to experiment different kind of editing program. I have been play around with FCP and AE a lot and ended up using both of them in the same time. The ePresence allowed me to get a touch with the new technology, supriously I did have a chance to do working as a camera operator for a live event. This is my first time to capture the live event, I know I did not do very well since there have been a lot of thing happen in the same time when operating a camera. But the experience that I gained is very valuable for me as a film student. For both internship, my position haven’t change. But I think I learned more than I aspect. For example, the internship is not like a individual project. Even thought each of us have some tasks, but it also rely a lot on the cooperation with other people. The major one is the relationship between the mentor and the intern. Just like working in the real world, people have to working with co-workers and boss. So this kind of experience of communication, interactions and co-operation is helpful for future.
continuity
I would love to continue both of my internship if it is possible because I think the work that I have been done are very interesting. I know for the Rockstar project that I involved is just a part of the Animal Lover project. So there might be some potential opportunity for continuing. Also the Interactive Future is one of the event that broadcasting by the ePresence. In the future, our school might use this technology to broadcasting more stuff for Emily Carr. For example, Grant mention about the Student Production Team that our school might create in next semester that hire students to broadcasting a lecture, a talk, or making some promotion video for Emily Carr. Those are the extra opportunities that the internship given me. The network that been created by the internship are also very beneficial. For example, since I have been know and working with Grant all the time during the Interactive Future, he told me about some project that he have been involved, and I asked if I can be volunteer in the event. So actually this opened up another opportunity for me to participate with the artists’ network.
relationship
I am very satisfy with the organization I am working with because both of my mentors are very patient. They listen what I suggest and comment. They don’t give me a very tie schedule so I have a lot of freedom to plan my workflow. The communication goes very well since we all check email very often and we all around the school during the week day. Moreover they both give me a lot of support. For example, when I mention about the possibility to use AE on the editing, Julie help me to get Simon to setup the program on the station, which give me a lot of connivance for editing. Also during the IF living broadcasting, Grant allowed me to use the admin account for the program so that I could easily setuped and made change when necessary.
expectation
I think I learned more than I expected for both internship. The most part I learn and impress me is the skill of working with others. Defiantly, the technical skills that I gained are very valuable. But I feel more like in a reality and more serious when I working as an intern because the sense of responsibility is stronger.
tasks after midterm
For the Rockstar project, I did the color correction part after the midterm. Julie provided me a rough cut and some sample images of the project, so what I did is following her request and apply them on the footage. [image]
For the ePresence, I did a rehearsal with Grant before the Interactive Future happened. We try to get the PowerPoint presentation upload to the program so we could show it while broadcasting the event online. But most of the artists cannot provide the slide show ahead of time. Therefore we ended up just broadcasting the live event. During the Interactive Future, Grant and I came at 8:30am in the morning and continue doing the broadcasting till 6pm in the afternoon for Friday and Saturday. Since only two of us working on the ePresence, so basically I am in charge with the camera and monitor the result online. Grant was monitoring the software and the audio. We uploaded all the achieve at the end of the day after broadcasting. We a few audiences watch the live event and gave us feedback by using the chat-room function when broadcasting. Even thought we don’t have many audiences, but I think it is quite successful because we are pretty much have chance to experience all the function on the ePresence and we know what we should do and what we should avoid.

Interactive Future is a new media art conference that happen once two years. The theme of IF’09 is “stereo”. This conference was host in the Intersections Digital Studios at Emily Carr University of Art and Design during November 19th to 21st. During this 3 days events, there were a lot of artists and specialists shared their works and ideas about the tendency of current media art with the focusing point of “stereo”. One of the most impressive presentation for me is Steve Dietz’s “Living in Stereo: Hertzian Lifestyles of the Always Connected”.
In Dietz’s speech, he talked about the fact of modern lifestyles – always connected. We are all connected by so many kinds of media. For example our “always on” cellphone, online social network, surveillance camera… those devices are all connecting us to someone, somewhere through the electronics from a virtual to the actual world. Dietz mention about the idea of co-location which I understand as appearing in multiple places at the same time. According of his example of the piece form “Telematic Connection”, the real time human online activity can control the light for the plant in the dark room. This is a simple an powerful example to show the different activities can be connected and affecting each other by the technology, no matter how irrelevance they are. Stereo can have many possibilities that not only limited to sound can visual. The virtual environment can also can carry out a huge impact. For example the comparison of actual war and war game video in Dietz’s presentation shows the actual and virtual environment are too similar to distinguish between them. Therefore, people might experience the actual via the virtual. It is an indirect experience with a direct influence. Moreover, the technology can make any kind of interaction possible. Dietz gave us an example of one camera can project the light on the other object when the other camera’s flash light is on. It change the result of the picture. We can see the manipulation can happen without any hint. The new technology media is very powerful that can transfer, interact and manipulate the communication between every single object. The terraces of communication is continually build up which result on the complexity of not only for the technology itself, but also challenging the personal senses capacity.
In my opinion, the new media art is a way to represent how the new technology impact our our life. It is a calling people’s awareness. By receiving the vary information through all our senses from infinite media, our mind and body are keep absorbing the “new role” consciously and unconsciously. We are using those technology day by day. They appear, we absorb. As time goes by, they are all surrounding us. We know they are there, but we forget they are there. Therefore they become a nature. The art as a tool to revolve the consideration of new media and technology, it can help audiences understand this “invisible” world more and stimulate people’s imagination and creativity.

Rockstar
Description:
For this project my role is assisting Julie to do the editing for the footage that she created. I have done the first task which is resize the frame and keep tracking Tom’s head not out of the frame. What I am working on right now is adding some color effects on the rough cut.
Learning Outcome:
- Getting more practice on Final Cut Pro
- Start to learn After Effect
Goal:
I hope I can get more deep on the After Effect because I realize it is a very interesting and powerful software. Moreover, I had a meeting with my FVIM instructors and technicians, after I present them my grad project proposal, we all realize that I would mainly use After Effect for my grad project which consider more like an animation. So right now is a very good timing to warm up a little bit.
ePresence
Description:
My role in this project is assisting Grant for using the ePresence system to record the events. Those events and presentation will upload on the web to be shared. Also, this system can do the online presentation board-casting, which means we can upload the slide show ahead of time, then when we board-casting the presentation, he/she can control the slide show while in the ePresence system.
What I have done for now is learning how to use the system and testing the software and the computer with Grant together. We used the system for capturing the Telemusic Concert which happened in the IDS on Oct 26th. But because we make a mistake on one step, so we only capture the last part of the events. It is a very sad thing, but we all learn something from the mistake. So we will have couple more tests before IF09 and hopefully no more incident happen.
Learning Outcome:
- Use the ePresence system to capture the live event and board-casting online.
- Cooperate and support the live events such as installing and testing the equipments.
- Learn how the sound devices function and the mix console.
Goal:
- Minimize the chance that mistake happen
- Learn how to use the system to do the live time presentation.
- side – Promote the ECU channel on youtube!!!
